It’s a statistical fact: fewer and fewer Americans self-identify as Christian (including a lot of Christians). Some have never stepped foot in a church. Others grew up in one and couldn’t wait to get out. They’ve all got their own stories, but their reasons often overlap. They’ve seen behind the curtain and experienced things they can’t imagine God being ok with. How did a movement based on Christ’s unconditional love for humanity become something so many now want nothing to do with? Is the criticism valid? Have we lost our way? Is modern Christianity anything close to what Jesus originally envisioned? If not, what would it look like to find our way back to something closer to the heartbeat of our founder?
